Rx List: The Internet Drug Index provides highly detailed information about hundreds of prescription, non-prescription and alternative medications available in the United States. The site offers searches not only by drug name, but also by a long list of characteristics, including pill id (in case you’ve found a tablet in your medicine cabinet but can’t remember what drug it is). If you’re not sure how to spell the drug in question, under Advanced Search you can opt for a “fuzzy” search that will find the closest matches to your spelling.

The home page also lists the top 300 drugs by the number of prescriptions dispensed, the top 200 drugs by U.S. sales, and the top 150 drug name searches on Rx List. The link to “Side Effects and Drug Interactions for 1450+ Products A to Z” provides a fast way to check for safety problems.

Links to the most recent additions to Rx List’s drug monographs – which turn up during a general search on any drug’s name – are also listed on the home page. A click here will take you to the new drug’s most technical description, including its chemical and structural formula.

The Online Pharmacy link opens Drugstore.com, a separate website from Rx List, where you can order prescription medications. Many drug searches will include advertisements with links to information on competing drugs.

Less conventional medicine is also addressed on the site’s home page. A click on the Alternatives link opens a page where you can perform a keyword search or simply click one of the three links: Western Herbs, Chinese Herbal Remedies or Homeopathics. Searches here provide thorough, detailed articles about specific substances in a question-and-answer format. The articles report what is known about such substances without passing judgment on the wisdom of using them.

Finally, the site provides a box with a few quick links to WebMD Health Source, another separate website. From the home page you can choose among “Newly Diagnosed?” “Take a Quiz,” “Questions Answered,” “Find it Fast” and “Breaking Health Alerts,” or perform a keyword search on WebMD from within the Rx List website. Additional WebMD resources, such as a medical dictionary, appear during more detailed searches of the site.
