 | Healthsite Overview: Net Wellness | |

You can get free answers to specific medical questions from an expert, delivered via email, from Net Wellness. More than 300 health providers associated with one of the three universities involved in this site – the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University – answer email questions. Physicians, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and optometrists all answer questions here. They usually respond within a few days.

Also on this free site, you can type in a keyword to search its extensive offerings, from the reader-friendly Adam Encyclopedia to a link to PubMed, the online reference to medical journals offered by the National Library of Medicine. Other references include Medline Plus, a major health site in itself; the Merck Manuals, a reference collection intended for health care professionals; and Translations, which offers readable medical information written for those with limited English skills. Other links are to ClinicalTrials.gov, an up-to-date listing of clinical trials that are accepting patients, and a link to Ohio State University’s own patient education website.
The Health Centers section organizes the site’s extensive information specifically about African-Americans, children, men, seniors and women. The “What’s New” section has a monthly newsletter and articles about timely subjects, such as peanut allergies in the schools and the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet.
The site offers a monthly, in-depth feature article on a subject related to a medical condition or preventive medicine. Many topics are seasonal, such as “Fighting Flu” and “Beat the Summer Heat.” These articles have multiple sections and are presented in large type for easy reading, and are archived for future reference.
The University of Cincinnati started Net Wellness in 1994 with a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The three universities and federal and state governments are its primary supporters.
