 | Healthsite Overview: Medline Plus | |

MedlinePlus.gov, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, uses everyday language and plenty of multi-media presentations to help make its 700 health topics understandable to laypeople. These agencies are respected worldwide for the high quality of their research, and strict standards are applied to the content accepted at this site.
The home page offers “Interactive Tutorials,” more than 165 sound-and-picture, user-controlled slideshows on topics ranging from abdominal aortic aneurysms to warts. By clicking the link, “Surgery Videos,” you can watch and listen to actual one-hour videos of what happens in the operating room during many relatively common operations. These include videos of surgeries for back pain, cancer, joint replacement, heart conditions and weight loss.
The “Health Topics” link takes you to a long list of resources specific to a disease or condition: news reports, overview articles, interactive tutorials, treatment reports, screening tools, alternative therapy reports, disease management articles, coping strategies, directories, related issues and information tailored to specific patient groups (men, women, children). The site also features a link to ClinicalTrials, gov, the database for clinical trials that are accepting patients, and a link to NIHSeniorHealth.gov, which has both large type and spoken word capabilities.
Additional resources include Drug Information, the ADAM Illustrated Medical Encyclopedia, a Medical Dictionary, Health News from the past 30 days, and links to directories of doctors, dentists and hospitals. The “Other Resources” link leads to local resources, libraries, organizations, government websites from other nations, a link to extensive government databases and a link to MEDLINE/PubMed, which references more than 14 million medical journal articles.
The center of the home page highlights a few late-breaking health news articles, a Featured Site for exploration, and an “In the Spotlight” feature which explores timely topics. You can also sign up for either daily or weekly email updates, either on general health or on specific health areas, and you’re invited to add a link to MedlinePlus.gov to your own website.
