 Health Tip: Keep Your Mind As Sharp As Your Age

Health TipAs we age we tend to grow conscious about our vital faculties. Some people tend to suffer from memory loss and this is a fear of many of us as we age. However where as these are natural processes, they are not inevitable and can be reversed.

You need to find out ways to keep your mind in perfect condition and prevent it from deteriorating with age. Physical exercise contributes to the development and maintenance of your physical self; similarly mental activities are essential for maintaining the power of your mind. A general way of doing this is to keep learning new skills that will keep your brain agile.

The more you learn the more your brain will grow. This active functioning of the brain leads to new connections between the cells and aids in the communication of cells. This activity is vital to increase the storage and retrieval process of your brain.

There are various methods and activities with which you could challenge your brain and improve not just your skills but also your brain functioning. The foremost activity that you can do is to read voraciously.

Read items of interest to you or if you have no particular area that you want to concentrate on, read a varied and rich assortment of stories and news items to expand your mind.

You could also indulge in your hobby and take it up as your occupation; this will not only give you creative satisfaction but also will give you a sense of belonging to a community of professionals in your chosen field. Learn a musical instrument.

A new language can give you an enormous sense of accomplishment.

Crossword puzzles or playing Scrabble will improve your vocabulary.

Research has proved that mental decline can be averted with a consistent routine of physical exercise. Exercise promotes growth and blood flow in your body including the brain and it keeps you agile and alert. It is recommended to exercise at least 30 minutes daily.

Eating well contributes to good nutrition.  As we age it is important to have healthy eating habits. A diet rich in fruits is very helpful since they contain anti-oxidants and will help prevent cholesterol from accumulating in your body. Alcohol should be consumed in moderation if at all.

In this world where things happen at break neck speed there are certain ill effects connected with this pace of life. Stress is an important factor that affects the human nervous system. Under stress the brain produces certain hormones that can be damaging if they persist for long periods. Chronic stress can make you feel depressed too. It is important to take breaks regularly; with periods of meditation  and relaxation.

Smoking should be avoided as we age as it heightens the risk of Alzheimer's disease. It also can contribute damage to the nerves and the lungs.

Your blood sugar level and thyroid levels should be routinely checked as they are essential indicators of the proper functioning of your body and can have an affect on proper mental functioning.

It is important to supplement your diet if you do not always eat correctly.  The best diet can still benefit from the extra nutrients that can come from proper supplementation.
